Adopt a dog at one of our dog adoption events in Folsom

Folsom sits at the edge of the Sierra foothills, with a lake on one side, a river running through town, and a restored Gold Rush main street in the middle. Dog owners here spend a lot of time outdoors, and the city’s paved trail network makes it easy to fit a long walk into an ordinary afternoon.

🐶 Dog-friendly restaurants

Historic Sutter Street is the place to start, with patio seating at Sutter Street Grill, Pizzeria Classico, and Fat Rabbit Public House. A block away, Karen’s Bakery and Café has a large patio that welcomes dogs. Outside the historic district, Pete’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and Coffee Republic on Folsom-Auburn Road both have dog-friendly patios, and Iron Horse Tavern welcomes leashed dogs on its covered, heated patio. Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar at Palladio even has a dog menu. Overall vibe: weekend patios on Sutter Street fill up with dogs, and nobody looks twice.

🌳 Parks, trails, and outdoor spots

Folsom has more than 50 miles of paved trails shared by walkers, cyclists, and dogs. The 2.5-mile Johnny Cash Trail runs from the historic district toward Folsom Dam, passing the prison Cash made famous. Dogs need to stay leashed on the paved trail. The Hinkle Creek Nature Area offers a shorter, shaded walk for leashed dogs.

🦮 Best dog parks

  • FIDO Field: A fenced off-leash park at Cummings Family Park, with separate areas for large and small dogs and a splash pad for hot summer days.
  • Pawspector Park: The city’s second off-leash park, also with separate play areas for large and small dogs.

🌊 Lakes and rivers

  • Folsom Lake State Recreation Area: Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails and can cool off in the water outside the designated swim beaches. Beals Point, Granite Bay, Black Miners Bar, and the Nimbus Flat swim and turf areas are off-limits to dogs.
  • Lake Natoma: Calmer water and a paved loop trail connecting back toward the historic district.
  • American River Parkway: Miles of riverside trail with spots to get wet along the way.

What’s unique about the dog scene here

The outdoors does most of the work. Between the lake, the river, and the trail network, Folsom dogs get more trail miles than patio time.

Summer heat is a real factor. Inland temperatures climb quickly, so early morning walks and water access matter more here than on the coast.

Nearby areas worth knowing

El Dorado Hills, roughly 10 minutes away, has dog-friendly patios at Brickyard Counter & Bar and Milestone Restaurant in Town Center. Rancho Cordova, roughly 15 minutes away, has a cluster of dog-friendly breweries and taprooms, including Fort Rock Brewing. Granite Bay, roughly 15 minutes away, is the north-side gateway to Folsom Lake trails.

💡 Big picture

Folsom gives dogs year-round trail access, lake and river water nearby, and a walkable historic district where patio dining with a dog is routine.

Location Manager

After raising five kids—including four feral boys—I know a thing or two about running with the pack. And as they all know, I’m a total sucker for dogs—especially the old-timers nobody else wants! While others chase puppies, I roll out the red carpet for the grumpy, grey-muzzled sweethearts. There’s nothing better than spoiling these senior pups with belly rubs, treats, and a cozy home for their golden years.

Lucky for me, I work for an organization that loves dogs as much as I do—because if they didn’t, trust me, I wouldn’t be here!
