Truckee is a mountain town through and through, with snowy winters, alpine lakes, historic downtown storefronts, and a dog on nearly every sidewalk. It’s an outdoor lifestyle that dogs love. Our Sparks event is about 45 minutes down the mountain, a drive well worth it for a new hiking buddy.
Getting to an adoption event
Take I-80 east from Truckee, drop down the canyon along the Truckee River, and you’ll reach our Sparks event at Tractor Supply Co. in roughly 45 minutes. In winter, check road conditions and chain requirements before you leave. When you find a dog on our available dogs page, reserve a spot to meet them.
Dog-friendly Truckee
Few places offer as much for an active dog. The Truckee River Legacy Trail is great for leashed walks, Donner Lake and the surrounding forest offer endless adventure, and downtown has plenty of patios where dogs are welcome. Rules differ by trail and beach, so check signs for leash and seasonal restrictions, and bring a warm coat for your dog in winter.

I’m Tara and I’m the Events Manager for Amazing Dogs Rescue Reno, where I get to help furry friends find their forever homes! My lifelong love for dogs began in childhood because my dad was a K9 officer. His K9 partners were additions to our family and I was hands-on with their care and love. Around the age of 12, my dad showed me the ropes with dog training. Fast-forward to the present, wherein our family has adopted our dog, Bronx, for our daughter (who has Down Syndrome). It’s been so rewarding to guide him through service certification. I’ve always been in awe of a dog’s capabilities to love and learn. It’s my passion to help people connect with their furry best friend(s)!
