Adopt a dog at one of our dog adoption events near Hillcrest

Hillcrest sits right next to Balboa Park, and it’s about a 10 to 15-minute drive to our adoption events in San Diego. That makes it easy for Hillcrest residents to find their new best friend at one of our events.

Getting to an adoption event

Our San Diego adoption events at Petco on Sports Arena Blvd are the closest option for Hillcrest adopters. Once you find a dog you’re interested in on our available dogs page, you can reserve a spot to meet them at our next San Diego event.

Dog-friendly Hillcrest

Hillcrest’s biggest advantage for dog owners is its location beside Balboa Park, which has three dog parks. Nate’s Point, at the end of the Cabrillo Bridge, is a fenced 2.3-acre off-leash area with shade trees, benches and a drinking fountain. Morley Field and Grape Street Dog Park are both nearby, and Grape Street is the largest of the three, with open fields and eucalyptus groves. The rest of Balboa Park is great for leashed walks, with wide paths, gardens and plenty to see.

Hillcrest also has plenty of patio dining, and many restaurants welcome dogs outdoors. Policies vary by business, so it’s worth checking before you sit down. One thing worth knowing: dogs must be on leash everywhere in Balboa Park outside the designated off-leash areas.
